Outdoor Classroom

Having access to activities outside of the setting, within the local environment and community or further afield, can enrich learning opportunities.  Children benefit from first hand contact with the weather, seasons and the natural world.  Outdoor environments can offer children freedom to explore, use their senses and be physically active and exuberant.  In order to fulfil our ‘Learning for Life’ aims and to respect children’s individual dispositions, Mulberry Bush children go outside of the nursery regularly for many different reasons including walking in the rain, shopping, a trip to the  theatre, climbing trees, bug hunting, growing vegetables or simply to run and play!

We have a courtyard to the rear of the building which is used for all ages in much the same way as the indoors is used, but here children have access to the elements adding an extra dimension to their play.   We have a small space on our carpark which is fenced off to provide a planting and growing area for the children.  Here they can learn more about where their food comes from and learn how to take care of plants as well as just enjoying digging in the soil!
